Prep School World Language

The goal of the World Language Department is to develop students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a foreign language and to encourage and enrich their understanding of world cultures. This starts in Grade 6 as students take a five-week introductory course in each of the languages offered at the school: Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, and Latin. At the end of the year, they pick the language they wish to make their own.

In Grades 7-12, students then go on to complete at least three levels of the same language. Capable and interested language learners are encouraged to select two or more languages. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are also available. Each class within the department combines a traditional belief in the importance of good grammar with modern methods, stressing the primacy of spoken languages.
