Middle School Theater & Dance

Theater & Dance Overview

For both semesters in 5th grade, students take theater class once a cycle. Engaging in the dramatic arts helps students grow their imaginations, strengthen their collaboration skills, practice empathy, sharpen their memories and communicate creatively. The curriculum focuses on the following: developing the actor’s instrument through voice and movement; basic improvisation & scenework with exercises focused on staging, relationship, and world-building; introduction to playwriting by exploring plot, dialogue, drafting & revision; devised ensemble performances through pantomime, tableaux and student-generated text.

Musical

The Middle School Musical is a fantastic opportunity for students in all grades to participate in a collaborative, enriching and fun theatrical project. Rehearsals take place primarily after school, as well as during in-school elective periods. Students will analyze text, study character development, sing, dance, learn about technical theater, build an ensemble and bring a story to life for their peers and loved ones. Students can participate at various levels of time commitment, depending on existing extracurriculars. All are welcome – no theatrical experience necessary!
