Currently, sixth-graders in Audrey Shalom’s current issues (CIRS) class are working on a three-month-long research project on topics such as depression, climate change, eating disorders and bullying. Students recently completed the first phase of the project, which included watching TED Talks, reading books, visiting websites and studying articles on their selected areas of interest.
Productions: Musical Theater
Beginning in the fourth grade, students have opportunities to act, dance and sing in musicals. In the Prep School, two musicals, performed in the Off-Broadway-sized theater, directed by faculty and choreographed by Broadway professionals, are spectacular highlights of the year. The musicals are divided by class years to give every student an opportunity to grow as a musician and actor. Professional musicians and a state-of-the-art sound system complement the productions. Past shows include "Chicago," Rent," "The Sound of Music," "Sweeney Todd" and "Grease."
Beginning in the third grade, students may choose from four instruments; by Middle School they can choose from 19, and play in the band, big band or orchestra. In the Prep School, student musicians can choose from several academic or club-level ensembles and groups and are afforded time to practice during the school day. Dedicated musicians may join elite groups, including the classical Musica de Camera chamber music ensemble, and Jazz Improv.
CGPS is truly a school filled with music, and nowhere is this more evident than in the dedication to vocal music. Choral singing begins in the Grammar School, is refined through the comprehensive chorus program in the Middle School, and culminates in the ensembles of the Prep School, including the rigorous requirements of Concert Chorale.
The study of jazz is a hallmark of the music curriculum, from studying the roots of the genre, to understanding advanced jazz theory, to playing in the School's multiple jazz ensembles. Students studying jazz harmony and form have the unique opportunity to play their instrument every day.
music theory & composition
The Prep School's expansive music theory and composition curriculum encompasses everything from the fundamentals of theory, harmony and arranging to film scoring, songwriting and demo recording. Students are also introduced to music technology programs such as Logic and Ableton. CGPS's student musicians are members of NYSSMA's prestigious state-wide band, chorus and orchestra, and student composers have had their work selected for performance.
