The Alex Bhak Experiential Learning Fellowship in the Arts and Humanities

About Alex Bhak

Alex attended CGPS from 2011–2015. He was a vibrant and curious young man who was loved by his peers and teachers. He was particularly invested in the exploration of the humanities.

He immersed himself in our most rigorous history, world languages and English classes, expressed himself in art and poetry, and led the School’s philosophy club. Alex brought joy to our community and demonstrated civic, social and cultural engagement. Alex’s passion and unique spirit inspired his peers and teachers alike — and has inspired this scholarship in his memory.

program Overview

The Alex Bhak Experiential Learning Fellowship in the Arts and Humanities was established in the fall of 2021. It empowers Prep School students to explore the world around them through experiential learning in the arts and humanities. Their out-of-the-classroom experiences are inspired by content taught in a Prep School course or other avenues in their lives.

All tenth through twelfth grade students are eligible to submit proposals to receive funding for real-world learning experiences they wish to undertake: attendance at performances, visits to museums, tuition for a class, domestic travel or any combination thereof. Experiential learning projects are often interdisciplinary and must include an element of civic, social or cultural engagement.

After the Bhak Fellows have delved into their explorations during the winter and spring terms, they come together at the April Symposium. This event, a celebration of their learning, provides a platform to share their experiences and the new knowledge they now hold with family members, teachers, classmates and other CGPS community members. Each Bhak Fellow delivers a 10-minute presentation that features highlights of their projects and articulates the connection between the experience and what inspired it.

CGPS is proud to host the Alex Bhak Experiential Learning Fellowship in the Arts and Humanities in Alex’s honor (CGPS ’15).

This program is funded with support from the Alex Nair Bhak Foundation.

WHEN I HEARD THE LEARN'D ASTRONOMER
By Walt Whitman

When I heard the learn’d astronomer,
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.
