Prep School Students Win Prestigious Songwriting Competition
Ruth Kornblatt-Stier

Going above and beyond this summer, three Prep School students won the prestigious New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) 2021 Creator Competition in the songwriting category for composing original contemporary-style songs. Ben K. ’23 won with his song “Wouldn’t Have to Fear,” Sascha H. ’24 won with her song “Better Without You” and Sophia O. ’24 won with not one but two songs entitled “Haze” and “Valentine.” In honor of their achievements, they are invited to participate in the songwriting showcase at the annual NYSSMA all-state conference this coming winter. Only ten songs are selected for the showcase, so it is especially impressive that CGPS students wrote four out of those ten songs this year.

Prep School Music Department Head Dr. Kary Haddad commented, “We’re very proud of these students and are thrilled that the NYSSMA Songwriters Showcase will allow more people to hear their work. We’re also excited to highlight our growing music theory and composition program, where many more students are developing skills and learning about tools that can support their own musical creativity.”

A huge congratulations to Ben K., Sascha H. and Sophia O.!
