On April 22 and April 23, Middle School classes 6-2 and 6-3 presented their visions for a utopian society as a culminating project for their unit on Lois Lowry’s The Giver. Students partnered with members of the other class, and pairs were tasked with creating a division of a utopian society that supports an “equitable high standard of living.” As part of their assignment, students not only had to design an optimal civilization but also had to determine if their utopia was possible considering the necessary trade-offs and restrictions that come with restructuring society.
Some societal divisions that students presented included transportation, government, sanitation, education, family, employment and resource distribution. First, the sixth graders summarized the essays they had written about their assigned divisions, and then they presented their online schematics and 3D models. A common thread throughout all the presentations was the importance of sustainable, eco-friendly living. One model for the utopian town hall included using bamboo as the primary building material. Another pair of students came up with a hydrogen cell powered plane as an achievable and sustainable mode of transportation. In addition, students discussed the importance of using solar power, wind power, geothermal energy and nuclear power as energy resources.
Students also imagined a world in which no animals are killed for food, economic injustice does not exist and where each person is not limited by necessity but is rather supported by societal systems as they pursue their interests and passions. Through their thoughtful ideas and proposals, these MS students truly demonstrated that they are the voices and leaders of the future.

The CGPS Book Fair is coming! Like many events during this school year, the Book Fair will look a little different than in years past.
On Friday, May 7, Core teacher Linda Beasley and her students in class 5A held their annual historical town hall debate over the colonists' declaration of independence from Great Britain. Students each claimed a historical figure to impersonate and subsequently argued from the perspective of their chosen figure.
On Tuesday, May 4, Dakota Becker and Alex Tomback, both from the CGPS Class of 2013, joined PS students and teachers to speak about their career trajectories and work in therapy.
